Babe Ruth Jersey Hits a $264,210 Home Run for Leland's

SEAFORD, N.Y. -- Babe Ruth's 1925 New York Yankees home jersey, one of only three Ruth home jerseys known to exist, sold for $264,210 during Leland's Sports Auction this past Saturday, May 30.

The jersey helped swell the two-day total for the auction to $4.7 million, making it the largest in the company's 15-year history.

Cataloged as the earliest known Babe Ruth jersey, it was "worn circa 1925 by the man behind the myth, whose name is synonymous with the Yankees." The jersey was accompanied by an undated photograph showing Ruth wearing it, taken in the Yankees dugout with Earle Combs and Bob Meusal. The lot received 17 bids before selling to an undisclosed buyer.

Other top lots included a set of 1911 M116 Sporting Life trading cards, 315 in all that sold at $175,831. A game used Ty Cobb bat, circa 1924-28 went for $70,332, Lou Gehrig's 1936 Sporting News MVP pocket watch brought $59,551, and Junior Gilliam's 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers world championship ring realized $42,551.
