ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Cataloged as a Connecticut example made as early as 1670, a sinuously carved oak chest with traces of red and black paint headlined Brunk Auction’s November 9-11 sale in Asheville. The one-drawer chest with minimal restoration sold for $168,000 including premium to a phone bidder against stiff competition from an underbidder, also participating by phone, and contestants in the room. The piece from the collection of North Carolina residents Bob and Dianne Ruggiero is thought to have been made in the shoreline town of Guilford, fifteen miles from New Haven. A group of maps and documents consigned by Colonial Williamsburg added $775,000 to Brunk’s total. Heading the group at $168,000 was a Revolutionary War journal by John Graves Simcoe.
