H. Richard Strand, Jr, 77, of Sandwich, Mass., died May 23 after battling Alzheimer’s disease for the past several years.

He was born, raised and educated in Falmouth, Mass. He joined the army in 1946 and served in England, France and Germany; he rose to the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1948.

Upon his return to Cape Cod, he pursued his love of antiques and in time went into partnership with Clifford D. Hanson. Together they operated antique shops in Worcester, Westborough, Hyannis and then Sandwich. Over the years, Richard and Clifford (who died in 1983) made many friends and delighted both customers and dealers with their highest quality of antiques and extensive knowledge in many different areas of the antiques business.

Richard specialized in early lighting and was most knowledgeable about Sandwich glass. He willingly shared his information and was generous with his time and energy, especially with beginning collectors. He was honest and reassuring. People were always delighted when visiting his shop in an early Federal mansion in the very heart of old Sandwich Village.

During the last 15 years, Richard exhibited an excellent selection of glass at the prestigious Westchester Glass Show and the Sandwich Glass Museum Show, assisted by his friends Robert and Suzanne Fratus.

Richard is survived by his many friends and customers including: Dorothy Black, his receptionist for more than 50 years; James Faria of South Dartmouth, Mass., who assisted in the shop for many years; Henry Callan of East Sandwich, who was good friends with Richard and Clifford for many decades; Molly and Duff Allen of Falmouth, Mass., who were the promoters of the Westchester Glass Show for many years.

Richard will be remembered as having only kind words to say about everyone he came in contact with and for his vast knowledge.
