– Currently on exhibit at the Childs Gallery is “At The Docks,” featuring works ranging from the late Nineteenth Century, to the 1930-40s Cape Ann School, to Modernists of the 50s and 60s.

The freedom, the industry and the sheer beauty of the sea have made it a subject to which many artists have been drawn. As they attempted to capture the essence of the ocean their eyes met with the various activities that surrounded the sea — boat building, fishing, bathing and the simple pleasure of a stroll on a dock. Each of these activities can be found in the works on exhibit.

Samuel W. Griggs’s (1827-1898) “View at Cohasset” beautifully represents the spirit of this exhibition. Two women sit in the foreground taking in the beauty of the ocean and distant boats while two men toil with a dory.

The famous docks of Gloucester, including the well-known Seven Seas Wharf, are depicted in Emile Gruppe’s (1896-1978) “Gloucester Harbor Scene” and Joseph Margulies’s (1896-1984) “Sitting at the Dock.” The watercolors of Lester Stevens (1888-1969), a founding member of the Rockport Art Association, are also featured in the exhibition.

Other artists included in this exhibit are William P. Burpee (1846-1940), Herbert Barnett (1910-1972), Henry Botkin (1896-1983), Richard Bassett (1900-1995), R. Swain Gifford (1840-1905), Charles Woodbury (1864-1940) and many more.
