A rare and attractive Mahantonga Valley Dutch cupboard in pristine red, green and black paint led the way at Conestoga Auction Company this past weekend, June 4-5.
One of three known examples by the unknown maker, the cupboard had sold during a Penny Packer auction in 1958, a Freeman auction in 1966 and was offered this time around from the Edmund “Doc” Bohne collection.
A host of bidders were lined up to compete for the lot, with it eventually selling for $264,000, going to Americana dealer David Wheatcroft.
Other top lots included a paint decorated corner Pennsylvania cupboard with broken arch pediment that was knocked down at $71,500, a John Drissel paint decorated spoon box, $28,600, and a yellow and blue stick spatter plate with bold tulip decoration that brought $18,700.
A complete review will appear in a future issue.
