The anticipated live auction offering the personal collection of Ted Williams on Saturday, April 28, at Fenway Park, saw historic results. Legions of Red Sox and baseball fans in general previewed the nearly 800 lots during the week preceding the auction.

Bidding was frenzied throughout the day and record-achieving pricing was seen in numerous categories. A top lot was Williams’s 1949 Most Valuable Player award plaque, which climbed to $299,000.

“The prices attained, across the board, were simply astounding,” said David Hunt, president of Hunt Auctions, which conducted the sale. In total, the auction grossed more than $3.5 million, nearly doubling its estimate.
