NEW YORK CITY — Christie’s sets new world auction record on January 22 in its inaugural various owner Outsider art sale—Liberation Through Expression: Outsider and Vernacular Art.

The top lot, William Edmondson’s “Boxer,” realized $785,000, tripling the previous record for the artist and setting a new world auction record for a work of Outsider Art. Bidding for the piece lasted nearly five minutes with a mixture of in-room, phone and online bidders, ultimately going home with a phone bidder.

The previous record for a work by William Edmondson was the sale of his “Mother and Child” for $263,000 at Christie’s, New York, in 2014. The previous category record for Outsider art was the sale of Henry Darger’s “Sans titre” for $745,076 at Christie’s Paris in 2014.

This sale of 50 lots included works across various media—sculpture, painting, works-on-paper and gelatin silver print photographs—from preeminent Outsider artists, including James Castle, Martin Ramirez, William Edmonson and Bill Traylor.
