GREAT FALLS, MONT. (AP) — A 1907 oil painting by Thomas Moran sold for $3.6 million at a western art auction March 17-19 in Great Falls.
The painting, “Castle Rock, Green River, Wyoming,” was the highest sale at the auction to benefit the C.M. Russell Museum. Auction sales for The Russell: An Exhibition and Sale to Benefit the C.M. Russell Museum totaled $7.1 million.
C.M. Russell Museum Executive Director Michael Duchemin said the Castle Rock painting was purchased by someone in the room, not over the phone.
Last year the highest sale for a single piece was $1.5 million.
