WEST SUSSEX, ENGLAND — The standout at Summers Place Auctions’ June 7 sale of the Natural History Museum collection of the Emmen Zoo was the duck-billed dinosaur, Harpocrasaurus stibengi, named “Freya,” that attained $193,213. The dinosaur sold above estimate to a phone bidder.

Almost as big as a T-Rex, the animal lived 75 to 67 million years ago and was discovered in North America. It is around 7.5 meters long and would have weighed about 4 tons.

Rounding out the sale were a rare Hoplophoneus, a sabre-toothed cat, that fetched $46,634; a skeleton of the progenitor of today’s horses, the Eohippus, that tripled its high estimate to bring $29,148; a rare bird fossil from the well know Green River formation in Wyoming sold for $18,214 to a phone bidder – over four times its top estimate. Phone bidders were successful on all these lots except a rare Hyrachyus skeleton from the Eocene era, probably South Dakota, that went to a floor bidder for $15,300.
