DALLAS, TEXAS – A high-grade but unrestored copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962), CGC VF+ 8.5, sold Thursday, February 23, for $155,350 during the first day of Heritage Auctions’ three-day Comics & Comic Art event. The day’s total sales exceeded $1.5 million.
The primary value of this issue, which was printed in August 1962, comes from the fact that it marks Spider-Man’s first appearance and origin. In addition, collectors are drawn to the issue—which has eclipsed all other keys of the Silver Age in both demand and value—by the fact that there are very few high-grade copies in existence, and this one has retained its condition without having undergone any restoration.
“Whether you’re talking about a longtime collector or someone who is brand-new to the hobby, everyone has a high-grade copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 near the top of his or her want list,” Heritage Auctions Comics and Comic Art Operations Director Barry Sandoval said. “Still, it is always pleasing to see Heritage clients step up to the plate.”
The remaining auction days, February 24 and 25, offer several key books and important collections, including the landmark collection of American cartoonist Richard Felton Outcault—considered by historians as the father of the American comic strip.
