NANTUCKET, MASS. – A signed scrimshawed tooth by Nantucket whaleman Edward Burdett led sales at Rafael Osona’s August 5 auction of island delights featuring Americana and marine and China trade art and antiques. Engraved by Burdett with a view of the ship Pacific of Nantucket, the Nineteenth Century artifact measuring 4¾ inches long crossed the block at $252,000 including buyer’s premium. Burdett was born on Nantucket in 1805. Most of his known work dates from the mid 1820s to his death in 1833. The tooth descended in Burdett’s family and was exhibited by the Nantucket Whaling Museum in 2005. Watch for a full review of Osona’s annual August auction in Antiques and The Arts Weekly.
