NEW YORK CITY — It was a big day for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 – 1901) at Poster Auctions International’s June 26 sale as his rarest image of French can-can dander Jane Avril took $132,000 including buyer’s premium. The poster was Toulouse-Lautrec’s final image of Avril, pictured as more of a lady than a dancer, and was so scarce because her impresario refused it and it was never shown. Finishing beneath it at $78,000 was another work from the artist, titled “Aristide Bruant Dans Son Cabaret.” Bruant, pictured with his back turned and a fierce look on his face, was a French cabaret singer and nightclub owner who made a popular act out of lampooning his own guests on stage.
