LOS ANGELES — Andrew Jones Auctions, a newly formed fine art and antiques auction house, conducted its inaugural auction: Design for the Home and Garden on September 15. The sale tallied an impressive 99 percent sold by lot and was led by a Tiffany Studios drop-head dragonfly table lamp, circa 1910, which came to the block with a $40/60,000 estimate. After strong bidding, the 31-inch lamp sold at $200,000. It featured a verdigris patinated leaded glass shade with jewel cabochons on a verdigris-patinated twisted vine base surmounted by four-light cluster with Perkins electrolier sockets, a 5-inch wheel and original 5-inch teardrop cap. The shade is stamped Tiffany Studios New York 1507, and the base Tiffany Studios New York 443. The iconic Dragonfly shade was designed by Clara Driscoll who worked for Tiffany Studios from 1888-1909. A prolific and innovative designer, she also served as head of the Women’s Glass Cutting Department.
