NEW YORK CITY — A painting by American artist John Gadsby Chapman (1808–1890) was the top lot at the March 3 Auctions at Showplace sale when it sold for $78,125, including buyer’s premium. The work hailed from the estate of New York City architect Hugh Hardy. Dated 1871, the oil on canvas titled “Harvest on the Roman Compagna” measured 40 by 72 inches in a gilt arched frame.
Chapman’s most notable work, “Baptism of Pocahontas,” was commissioned by the United States Congress and hangs in the United States Capitol rotunda.
