Mickey Mouse Roars As King Of Animation Art In Kensington Sale
CLINTONDALE, N.Y. – Kensington Estate Auctions’ July 13 online auction brought to market a gratifyingly priced stellar collection of original Paul Cadmus drawings and Hollywood memorabilia. Bidders clearly found favor with the Disney Mickey Mouse character studies. Dating to the early 1930s, these animation studies achieved $6,581 and are staying in the United States in a longtime private animation art collection. Due to gratifying prices realized, Kensington Estate Auction said that its August 31 auction will include additional original Paul Cadmus drawings and Hollywood signed/autographed memorabilia. Australian Painting Leads Applebrook’s ‘East Meets West’ Sale
NEW MILFORD, CONN. – A Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri painting titled “Men and Women’s Dreaming at Mount Wedge NT” exceeded all expectations in Applebrook Auctions’ July 13 “East Meets West” sale. The work, which had been purchased in Australia in 1988 by the former president of Union Carbide as an anniversary present for his wife, had been estimated at $4/8,000 and was chased by bidders from Australia before it sold for $10,200 to a private collector in the United States. Distinctive Design Takes Sultanabad Rug To The Top At Material Culture
PHILADELPHIA – Material Culture rolled out the carpets for a no-reserve sale of the category on July 15. Of 317 lots offered, 291 sold, with a Persian Sultanabad rug from the early Twentieth Century taking top honors at $6,400. Of wool pile with cotton warp and weft, it weighed in at 95 pounds and measured 12 feet 4 inches by 17 feet 2 inches. Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Skeleton Clock Reigns Supreme At Bonhams
LONDON – A skeleton clock made by Camerer Cuss & Co to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897, sold at Bonhams clocks sale on July 15 for $122,539, nearly ten times its estimate. The sale was 77 percent sold by lot and 85 percent sold by value. Bonhams director of clocks James Stratton said, “This was one of the finest skeleton clocks I’d ever seen; in excellent condition, incorporating the latest technological advances of the time and with a fascinating history. Hartzell’s Summer Firearm Auction Goes Off With A Bang
BANGOR, PENN. – The July 17 Summer Firearm Auction at Hartzell Auction Gallery, Inc., offered more than 500 lots from the Sussex County, N.J., estate of Private First Class Sanford Levenson. The estate collection featured World War II rifles, medals, badges, swords and daggers, as well as guns by Colt, Winchester, Remington, Marlin, Springfields, Parker, and Thompson, but it was a Smith & Wesson .44 magnum model 29-2 double-action revolver that got the most bang for the buck, selling for $3,910 on a $400/800 estimate to a trade buyer bidding in the room.
