EAST MORICHES, N.Y. — On May 21, South Bay Auctions offered 422 lots from the estate of quilt dealer, expert and author, Laura Fisher (1945-2021). Bringing $7,200 and leading the sale, which was more than 96 percent sold, was a mid-Twentieth Century African American strip bars five-panel pieced quilt from Tennessee that measured 89 by 75 inches. Besting its $600/800 estimate, it was acquired by a phone bidder. It was one of a few African American quilts in the sale. With quilts comprising nearly half of the sale, it also featured furniture, jewelry, needleworks and other household furnishings. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. A more extensive sale recap will appear in a future issue.
