BLOOMFIELD, N.J. — Nye & Company Auctioneers conducted the sale of Property from a Private Collection on May 25, offering 50 lots of exceptional American, English and Continental fine and decorative art. The top lot was a Chippendale carved mahogany card table, possibly crafted by Benjamin Baker of Newport, R.I. (1735-1822), circa 1760-70. A similar table attributed to John Townsend (1732/33-1809) exists in the Rhode Island Furniture Archive at Yale University, which sports the same style of open-talon feet. The card table won the house at $307,500 in one competitive hand. Price quoted includes the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. A more extensive review of the sale to follow in a future issue.
