PINEVILLE, PENN. — Locati’s October 2022 Sale on October 16 was an intriguing mix of fine art, decorative arts and luxury accessories, spanning from a large collection of watches to mounted specimen cases of butterflies. The top lot of the auction was an unexpected group lot strike of seven ornithological watercolors estimated at $500-$1,000 that bid to $35,000. Several of these had J. Whatman watermarks, two of which were dated 1796. The watercolors were likely painted circa 1800 by an unknown English artist living in India, a speculation derived from the Persian-style Indian ink stamps on the reverse of three of the paintings. Each of these depicts a different bird with accompanying penciled English inscriptions. Price quoted with buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. More on this and the sale to follow in an upcoming issue.
