HINGHAM, MASS. — A strong selection of sporting art combined with choice decoys for Copley’s Winter Sale, February 24-25. The top eight highest priced lots were evenly divided between paintings and decoys. Richard Bishop’s 1945 oil on canvas, signed, dated and titled “Prairie Wings,” sold mid-way through the first day topped all, earning $180,000. Fittingly, the sale’s second highest price was achieved by a decoy, a 1921 humpback black duck by the Ward brothers that brought $90,000. The sale included a large single-owner collection of Pacific Coast decoys, several carvings by Elmer Crowell, numerous miniature and decorative carvings by Frank Finney, Allen King and others, a collection of decoys made on Nantucket, and sporting art by Bob Kuhn, Percival Rosseau, Aiden Lassell Ripley, Lynn Bogue Hunt and others. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house; a full report will follow.
