BUFORD, GA. — Slotin Folk Art’s Spring Masterpiece Auction set a hot pace with an expanded two-day event April 22-23. With nearly three decades as a leading source of folk, outsider and self-taught artwork, this sale included additional genres of work; strong prices prevailed. Associated with the Chicago Imagist group, Roger Brown’s “Visit the Oregon Coast” topped the sale at $115,000, including buyer’s premium, within estimates of $100/200,000. Imagist artists were students of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago who were working in the late 1960s. “Visit the Oregon Coast” is composed of a 52-by-74-inch oil on canvas panel with taxidermist preserved shore birds mounted in front of the panel. Provenance of this example included a photo of Brown with this work which was included in the lot. A full review of this two day, 700-plus-lot event, which included a William Dawson carved cane stunning surprise, will appear in a future issue.
