NEW YORK CITY — Swann Auction Galleries’ Focus on Women sale on June 1 showcased an eclectic set of material representing women’s contributions to art, life and society. From Louisa May Alcott to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Catherine the Great to Susan B. Anthony, and Jane Austen to Amelia Earhart, the works of many famous women were included. But the sale wouldn’t fulfill its brief without emphasizing the everyday lives of women, their unsung accomplishments and triumphs. Novelist Charlotte Perkins Gilman (American, 1860-1935) outshined these illustrious figures with her family archive of photographs and letters that blew past its $700/900 estimate to achieve $60,000. The archive included approximately 45 photographs of Perkins, many signed and inscribed, promotional materials for her work, seven letters, handwritten and typed draft pages and a family photo album. More on this and other winning lots to follow.
