COLUMBUS, OHIO — Amelia Jeffers, who launched her eponymous auction house in November 2019, conducted a two-day sale May 25-26, with 339 lots of coins and jewelry on the first day, and another 381 opportunities for buyers of antiques, art and collectibles. A high flyer at the sale led a strong folk art section and was a pair of monumental carved stone figures by Ohio carver Ernest “Popeye” Reed, which sold to a collector in Pennsylvania, for $8,400, beating the lot’s estimate of $4/8,000. The figures — a seated man and woman — stood 40 and 30 inches tall, respectively, while the female figure was signed “E. Reed.” Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. A more extensive recap of the sale will appear in an upcoming issue.
