GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Roland Auctions NY, having just launched monthly two-part auctions with its successful Multi-Estates sale, enjoyed the spotlight on Contemporary and Fine Art on June 2 and 3, while also featuring two days’ worth of decorative arts, gold and silver jewelry, Twentieth Century modern, antique and vintage furniture, textiles, rugs, collectibles, Asian art, silver and lighting. This particular auction was a treasure trove of moderately priced fine and contemporary art, with a great many top sellers in the art arena seeing bidding quickly shoot up past the estimates.
Paintings by American artists were popular with bidders. A Manoucher Yektai (1921-2019) oil on canvas floral still life, signed and dated 1969, sold for $15,000, while other top sellers included a Norman Lewis (1909-1979) oil on board abstract in waves of colors, with inscription, signed lower left and dated, achieved $10,625. Also achieving this price was a Richard Mayhew (b 1924) watercolor landscape of a hillside with red and blue trees, and an Albert Eugene Gallatin (1882-1952) oil on board geometric abstract in colors, signed on back and dated September 1945, went for $7,500.
Jewelry also showed well at the two-part auction, highlighted by a necklace and earrings set containing a pear shaped genuine Colombian emerald weighing 5.02 carats, as well as diamonds, rubies and large cultured pearls that sold for $10,000. Another 18K yellow gold diamond necklace with a total of 6.7 carats of diamonds with matching earrings totaling 2.8 carats achieved $8,750. A unique figural brooch attributed to Seaman Schepps of a 14K yellow gold soldier on horseback, enhanced throughout with multicolored pastel sapphires (both faceted and cabochon) was engraved “H to B” and dated 1940. The brooch rode off for $3,125; a similar example is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s collection.
Standouts in other categories included a Tiffany & Co eight-piece sterling silver drinks set by John C. Moore, II, which sold for $5,937. A large Chinese jade model of a three-masted galleon, carved with double dragons and four pagodas, showed gold calligraphy on its center sail and went for $3,125. In furniture, a Nineteenth Century Louis XV-style gilt carved and filigree pedestal with oval shaped marble top was bid to $3,437.
