CRANSTON, R.I. — A tiny (4-inch tall) miniature stoneware covered crock with even tinier cobalt decoration brought the highest price of 85 lots of toys deaccessioned from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum, offered by Bruneau & Co Auctioneers the evening of July 17. Topping off at $9,063, an exponential result compared with its $200/300 estimate, the piece had been given to RISD by Mrs Henry Vaughan in 1944. Bruneau saw more than 97 percent of the lots sell with a sale total of nearly $50,000. The sale was not the only auction Bruneau conducted that evening, it followed 120 lots from the Rainbow Brite Rainbow Land Museum in Apex, N.C. All lots in that sale sold with a total of $27,675, led by two lots who earned the sale’s top price of $1,875. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house. A more extensive review of both auctions will appear in an upcoming issue.
