CHICAGO — A French carved marble bust of Elisa Bonaparte, carved in the early Nineteenth Century and standing 24 inches tall, was the top lot in Hindman’s 427-lot sale of European furniture and decorative arts sale on October 10. Estimated at $3/5,000, it achieved $34,650. When we reached out to Corbin Horn, Hindman’s vice president and senior specialist in European furniture and decorative arts, he was happy to give a few more details behind the success of the lot. “It seems to have been the winning combination of early Nineteenth Century Neoclassical subject matter, a beautifully executed carving and in fine condition, and favorable provenance, having come from the diverse collection of Eighteenth Century and Empire-period goods from a Chicago Francophile. Bidding was between several online bidders and four phone bidders from the United Kingdom, France and Canada before selling to a private East Coast United States buyer.” Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house.
