PIKE, N.H. — Steenburgh Auctioneers’ Petroliana auction on October 29 brought well over 200 buyers to the outdoor sale. Despite poor weather, the very first lot — a flanged Boyce MotoMeter double-sided sign — finished at the top of the auction, at $34,500, including the buyer’s premium. The sale, which included dozens of porcelain signs, dozens of gas pumps, oil cans, license plate toppers, among other things, was the estate of a well-known local collector who had been collecting for more than 50 years. Adding to the local interest, much of the collection had been displayed outside the collector’s home on a busy local road. An early Phillips 66 gas pump earned $3,910 to lead that category. License plate toppers, especially those of local interest did well with an Old Man of The Mountain example earning $776. A full report will follow in a forthcoming issue.
