MARION, MASS. — Leading Marion Antique Auctions’ December 3 Winter Sale at $28,800, including buyer’s premium, was James Edward Buttersworth’s (American/UK, 1817-1894) “Cheering Them On,” an oil on artist’s board composition depicting yachts racing off Sandy Hook, N.Y. Measuring 13½ by 17½ inches in what appeared to be a period gilt frame that retained its original framer’s label for Thomas Hooper of Nassau Street, N.Y. The painting had descended in the family that purchased it from the Smith Gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City. Bought by a local private collector, it was the top lot in a 578-lot sale that was more than 95 percent sold. A more in-depth review of the auction will run in an upcoming issue.
