EAST DENNIS, MASS. — East Coast maritime aficionados are probably aware that the mid Nineteenth Century whaleship Charles W. Morgan has a permanent home at Mystic Seaport on Connecticut’s coast. A 48-inch-long model of the ship, made by Boston model ship builder Peter Ness (1890-1976), was the top lot in Eldred’s two-day Winter Marine sale, February 26-27. Demonstrating exquisite detail and a copper sheathed hull, it led a selection of about 30 ship models and sold, to a trade buyer bidding on the phone, for $20,160. The auction was about 85 percent sold and achieved a $576,000 total. All prices include the buyer’s premium; additional highlights from the sale will be discussed in an upcoming issue.
