Contemporary Artists at Barry Friedman
NEW YORK CITY – Barry Friedman Ltd presents “: 1900-2000,” featuring works of contemporary Italian glass artists exhibited within the context of Italian masters from the first half of the Twentieth Century.
Expanding on many of the Murano techniques and traditions, these artists have not only revived the creativity of their predecessors, but are producing some of the most innovative and exciting works in contemporary glass. The exhibition will feature work by Artisti Barovier, Fulvio Bianconi, Napoleone Martinuzzi, Yoichi Ohira, Laura de Santillana, Carlo Scarpa, Archimede Seguso, Paolo Venini, and Vittorio Zecchin.
Contemporary artists Laura de Santillana and Yoichi Ohira continue to experiment with material and form. De Santillana’s newest body of work contains multiple layers of glass creating bands of color fields evoking the paintings of Mark Rothko. Ohira simultaneously creates different series of work. Some vessels allow the natural and unpredictable markings of the fire to determine the surface design, while other vessels are highly controlled with planned patterning. Other contemporary artists included in the exhibition are Cristiano Bianchin, Davide Salvadore, and Claudio Tiozzo.
Running concurrently in an adjacent gallery is “Jean Chauvin: Sculpture and Drawings (1928-1966).” Both exhibits run September 12 to October 28.
