WEST GREENWICH, R.I. – Martone’s Auction Gallery’s Sunday, January 21 auction had to be postponed to the following night at 7 o’clock, after a severe winter storm dumped eight inches of snow between 7 am and noon, making it impossible for travelers to reach the event. This is the first time in 25 years that Martone’s Auction Gallery had to delay an auction due to bad weather; however, Monday night still produced a standing-room-only crowd.
The highlight of the sale was a New York Duncan Phyfe dressing table (1810-1815) that brought $46,000. The piece attracted several left bids, much competition from the floor and three participants on the phone. Bidding was rapid ending with two competitors on the phone until the winner prevailed for $47,200 with the ten percent buyer’s premium.
Other highlights included Victorian s-roll top desk in cherry, which sold for $4,290; a set of six Tiffany salts, which fetched $1,320; an oil on canvas by G.A. Hays, that went to a local dealer for $2,420; and a Stickley drop front desk, no. 706, that reached $3,410.
A large Victorian oak china closet sold to a local collector for $8,360; a sofa table with a horn of plenty base went to a New England dealer for $3,300; a Victorian oak armoire with bonnet top sold to a California dealer on the phone for $2,090; a 16-inch Copeland punch bowl realized $1,870; a maple slipper foot high boy garnered $3,190; and an oak Regina disk player with stand sold for $3,740.
