Zsolnay reached the apogee of its success with Art Nouveau pieces made during the early Twentieth Century, winning top prizes in Paris, St Louis, Milan and London. This lidded container with snail-shaped feet, 1912-13, is decorated with the shimmering eosin glazes designed to compete with contemporary French luster ceramics and American Tiffany glass.

LITCHFIELD, CONN. – In 1997, Don Bracken, an artist from West Cornwall, Conn., became one of the first artists selected to participate in the new Artist-in Residence program that occupied space on the 91st floor of the World Trade Center in New York City. New Arts Gallery is presenting Don Bracken, “: Paintings from the World Trade Center” through September 30.

Apart from the events of September 11, 2001, these paintings are exceptional; in light of those events, they are extraordinary. The images in Bracken’s paintings have been strengthened by the events that occurred a year ago in New York City. They will never be viewed with the same eye for which they were intended. In almost prophetic fashion, Bracken created a series of paintings in 1997 of flames rising up outside of the long rectangular windows of the 91st floor. Eerily absent from these paintings are the Twin Towers themselves, as these paintings documented the view from within the 91st Floor of the World Trade Center from a view that no longer exists.

Time and history will determine the importance of both the cultural program that was created for the World Trade Center and the work produced by the artists that participated. But there is no question that the images in this exhibit will both move and have special meaning to those who view them.
