PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Guyette and Deeter’s August 8-9 sale was built around three major collections; one collection of American paintings that included works by Edmund Osterhaus, Winslow Homer and a Mary Cassatt that earned $480,000, and two collections of decoys, one of which featured a Ward Brothers pintail that earned $120,000. In all, ten items sold for more than $100,000 each and more than a dozen others each exceeded $50,000. There were cigar store Indians, carvings by Edgar Tolson and Elijah Pierce and a rare walking stick by Henry Gudgell. The August 7 preview party for the live sale was attended by nearly 200 people and the salesroom was full when the sale began. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a more extensive auction review will appear in an upcoming issue.
