EAST DENNIS, MASS – Spring was in the air over the weekend of April 6-8 at Eldred’s, where just under 1,500 lots of Americana, paintings and maritime art went under the gavel. Leading sales was the Cape Cod auctioneer’s striking cover lot, an elephant-folio edition of John Joseph Audubon’s print “Carolina Parrot.” With a Whatman watermark, the work engraved, printed and colored by Robert Havell achieved $78,000 including premium. Flocking to its side was Audubon’s “Pileated Woodpecker,” $42,000. Eldred’s secured both prints from a Cape Cod, Mass. estate. Part two of the scrimshaw collection of the late Thomas Mittler featured a whale’s tooth embellished with a lively view of the engagement between the Shannon and the Chesapeake, with a scene of a gale on reverse. The tooth attributed to the Lady Wellington engraver made $72,000. Watch for a complete report on Eldred’s Spring Americana, Paintings and Maritime Art sale in an upcoming issue of Antiques and The Arts Weekly.
