DOWNINGTOWN, PENN. — An 8-inch-tall Tibetan sculpture of Buddha was the top lot in Pook & Pook’s December 6 sale which offered nearly 850 lots of Native American objects, antique toys and an assortment of decorative accessories. Despite an estimated range of $300/500, the “Tibetan bronze and cloisonné Buddha” sold for $12,600, including buyer’s premium. Likely from the Seventeenth Century, this sitting Buddha sculpture is depicted in the vajrasana pose, also known as adamant posture, lotus or diamond, which the Sakyamuni Buddha adopted when attaining Enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree. In this common pose, the legs are crossed, and the soles of the feet are facing upwards. Buddha rupas in this pose are said to be representative of meditation and serenity. A more complete review of the auction will be in an upcoming issue.
