DALLAS — A guitar owned and played by both Duane Allman and Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash soared to $591,000 to claim top-lot honors in Heritage Auctions’ Entertainment & Music Memorabilia auction July 20–21. It is one of more than a dozen guitars owned — and in some cases, played — by Nash, who became a collector of other guitarists’ guitars. Duane Allman’s circa 1961/62 Gibson SG, cherry, solid body electric guitar, serial No. 15263, owned and played by Graham Nash, sparked numerous bids to race past its $250,000 estimate. It is known best as the guitar Allman played on the live recording of “Statesboro Blues,” the opening track of At Fillmore East. It was the first guitar Graham purchased when he began his guitar collection. The price includes the buyer’s premium. Stay tuned: a full review of the auction will appear in a future issue.
