REHOBOTH, MASS. — Americana Auctions brought more than 500 lots to its Excellent June Estates Auction on June 4, consigned from homes and estates in southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the Islands, Connecticut and Long Island, N.Y. Perhaps unsurprisingly, nautical items were popular among bidders. First was an 1859 Nantucket ship’s portrait of the Turtle, signed by artist Jacob Harnack and the vessel’s captain, which sold for $5,313 ($1,2/1,600). A 6-inch Nineteenth Century oval whalebone-covered ditty box with finger joints surprised at $2,250 ($600/800), and a scrimshaw whale tooth of the ship Falcon achieved $2,125 ($600/800). Prices quoted with premium as reported by the auction house, a more extensive review to follow in an upcoming issue.
