VERO BEACH, FLA. — The Fine Art, Antiques & More Estate Auction took place on Saturday, January 13, at Vero Beach Auction. Living up to its name, the 312-lot sale featured many attractive works of art. Works by Florida Highwaymen artists including Roy “R.A.” McLendon (American, b 1932) and Harold Newton (American, 1934-1994) dominated the top lots. Newton was a founding member of The Florida Highwaymen, a group of Floridian African American landscape artists. The sale’s top position went to a signed Newton night ocean landscape with palm trees, which sold for a premium-inclusive $14,000, ahead of its $7/12,000 estimate. A more in-depth sale recap will appear in a future issue.
