PROVINCETOWN, MASS. — James R. Bakker Antiques, Inc. set a new record for Gerrit Beneker on May 20 in its Spring Live Online-Only Fine Art Auction, a record held for nearly 20 years. Estimated at $2/3,000, the self-portrait by Beneker skyrocketed with both pre and live auction action landing on a final sale price of $28,120. Other top prices included a rare color woodblock print, “A Salt Creek, Cape Cod” by Margaret J. Patterson for $5,938, a highly desirable scene by Nancy Whorf, “Winter Night in Provincetown,” also for $5,938 and a small — 3 by 6 inches — Anne Packard, “Red Umbrella,” for $4,375.
Results were very good for works by Provincetown artists, including George Yater’s “Setting Sun-Provincetown” ($4,375), Mary Hackett’s “3 Faces” ($4,063), Sol Wilson’s “Shore in Autumn” ($3,750) and Michael Mazur’s untitled abstract ($3,000). Prices were also good for pieces by unknown artists including a “Hawthorne School” mudhead that sold for $4,375.
With 172 lots available, including post-auction sales, Bakker also set its own record with just two lots unsold, a remarkable 98.9 percent sale rate.
