Bellamy Eagle Soars into Dealer Hands for $20,700
NEWTOWN, CONN. — One of the featured lots at the Saturday evening, June 29, sale at Fairfield Auction was a John Haley Bellamy carved and polychromed eagle that came directly out of a Fairfield County estate.
Several left bids, five phone bidders, and interest in the gallery competed for this carving that was sold to David Wheatcroft of Westborough, Mass., for $20,700. The eagle and banner had a wonderful untouched surface; however, there was a small break in the “welcome” banner.
“We expected this piece to do well,” Jack DeStories, gallery owner, said, indicating that he had found the carving in a box while gathering other things for the auction.
A review of the sale will be in a future issue of Antiques and The Arts Weekly.
