PHILADELPHIA — The November 15 sale of American furniture, folk and decorative arts at Freeman’s gave institutions, trade buyers and private collectors 171 opportunities to buy and buy they did, taking home nearly 85 percent of the lots. The top price of the day — $37,800 — was realized by a rare glazed, slip and sgrafitto-decorated redware plate, by Solomon Grimm (1787-1847) of Rockland Township, Berks County, Penn., and dated to circa 1815. The plate had several factors working in its favor, including a bold characteristic design and provenance to landmark early collector Mrs J. Insley Blair, the New-York Historical Society and the collection of Leah and John Gordon. Lynda Cain, Freeman’s vice president and head of the department, noted it had some restoration that kept the price from soaring. Estimated at $15/25,000, it sold to a private collector for nearly the same amount it brought when the New-York Historical Society sold it in 1995. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a more extensive sale recap will appear in an upcoming issue.
