NEW YORK CITY — An early Twentieth Century Black Forest carved wood umbrella stand, modeled in the form of a seated dog with a branch-form umbrella holder, was “Best in Show” when it earned $25,200, including premium, at Doyle’s May 10 “Dogs in Art & Sporting Art” sale. Standing 33¾ inches tall, and estimated at just $4/6,000, the piece attracted a lot of presale interest and a representative for the house said, “We knew it would do very well, but we didn’t expect it to do that well.” Bidders from both the United States and overseas competed for the charming piece, which ultimately sold to a private American collector. A roundup of more of the sale’s highlights will be the focus of a later review.
