MESA, ARIZ — On Friday and Saturday, January 20-21, Brian Lebel’s Old West Auction offered more than 700 lots of material owned and used by Hollywood stars, Wild West show and rodeo performers, along with dozens of elaborate parade saddles, bridles, pieces of apparel, advertising posters and Native American beadwork. Leading the sale and bringing $82,600 was a circa 1937 carved leather and silver mounted parade saddle made by Edward H. Bohlin, “Saddle Maker To The Stars”; it was offered with its matching bridle and breast collar. The saddle had belonged to — and been used by — Ely Montana, a performer known for riding a dancing horse and helping her husband Montie in his roping act. The sale included numerous items belonging to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans with the sale’s second highest price — $41,350 — earned by Roger’s personal gun rig with two carved leather holsters, carved leather belt, a buckle inlaid with rubies, and two Colt single action army revolvers. A poster for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show realized $10,890. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; a full report will follow in a future issue.
