MIAMI, FLA. – Selling 98 percent of its lots and drawing bands of conventioneers from the concurrent Florida Toy Soldiers and Action Figures Show, the February 3 sale of Lead Soldiers and Military Miniatures, conducted by Sloan’s Miami, enjoyed strong results.
The gallery hosted the event, the first of a two-session auction of a private single-owner collection, off-site in West Palm Beach in conjunction with the annual gathering of toy soldier enthusiasts. Top lots included pieces by Britains, Imperial and Lucotte.
Among the highlights, a Britains set #2014 Marine Band in winter dress, circa 1955, fetched $1,150, rising above its estimate of $1/1,200. A group of Lucotte Kettle Drummers generated active bidding as well, reaching $920 against a presale estimate of $550/750. This group featured a First Chasseur, a Carabibere and a Chauseur de la Garde of various regiments.
Also noteworthy was a set of Bulgarian Infantry, Britains set #172 dating to the 1930s. This lot realized $805 against an estimate of $650/800, while a Britains set #2018, a Danish Army in full dress, met expectations at $747.50.
The sale offered two boxes of figures from Imperial’s discontinued Heirloom Series, each estimated at $600/800. The 40-piece Series #1, Queen Cameron Highland figures, fetched $690, while the 40-piece Series #2, Queen Cameron Highlanders in Action, reached beyond estimate at $920.
Britains Racing Colours were highly sought after, all bringing results at or well above top estimates. Among these, a Lord Woolavington set #237 realized $138 against its estimate of $70/90, a Green Tree Stables took $138 against an estimate of $70/110, and a Lord Derby fetched $149.50 against its estimate of $80/120. A John Hay Whitney set finished above all at $143.75 after an estimate of $70/100.
A full gallery and several phone bidders competed for more than 320 lots. The majority of bidders were participants in the convention, hailing from all points in the US. The sale proved to be a big attraction during the weekend-long toy soldiers show and resulted in more than 40 new bidders to the auction house.
