CAMBRIDGE, MASS. — A strong and varied sale at CRN Auctions on April 23, in which more than 15 lots sold for more than $10,000, was topped by a gouache and ink by Alexander Calder (1898-1976). It was signed and dated in pencil and the reverse was inscribed “C525.” The opening internet bid was $35,000 and there were bidders on four phone lines. Four became two, with the winner paying $76,860. A circa 1740-60 Queen Anne Philadelphia dressing table brought $17,080. The sale included single-owner collections, including a superb group of Northwest Coast tribal blankets and masks, a selection that included a Chilkat blanket which sold for $31,720. Another single-owner collection featured Colonial Spanish silver and artwork. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium as reported by the auction house; a full report will follow.
