CAMDEN, S.C. — Wooten & Wooten Auctioneers’ January 13 Winter Estates & Collections Auction saw success with nearly 80 percent of the 523 lots of period furniture, fine art, silver and others sold. Highlighting the auction was a circa 1790 Charleston federal carved mahogany rice bed. Representing an iconic piece of Southern decorative art, this rice bed is the first of its kind to be sold by Wooten & Wooten. The piece boasts an impressive provenance, having been featured in the second volume of The Furniture of Charleston as well as retaining a 1978 label from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. Alongside probable original ownership by the Stoney Family, bidding proved competitive. Ultimately, the bed achieved $42,000, including buyer’s premium. A more extensive review of this sale will appear in an upcoming issue.
