DUXBURY, MASS. — A cherry candlestand from the Watervliet Shaker community topped Willis Henry’s June 18 auction; it was his first Shaker sale in three years. The tripod stand, retaining its original red-stained finish, had a round top and a bulbous turned shaft. It also had a metal cleat joining the three legs to the shaft and that cleat had the number “1” painted on it. That number refers to the room number of the Shaker dwelling house at Watervliet where it was used. The stand has been illustrated in one of the major reference books on Shaker furniture and has an oral history of being used in that community. It sold for $55,000. A large elder’s rocking chair brought $50,000 and several other pieces also brought five figure prices. The well-attended sale had a number of quirky Shaker devices, along with several other pieces of furniture and accessories. A full report will follow.
