VINELAND, N.J. — Rare untouched original condition and freshness to market were two factors that drove a complete Märklin Fidelitas Clown Train to the head of Bertoia Auctions’ Annual Fall Sale November 17-18. It was consigned by a UK collector who received it as a child for their circus-themed bedroom but who did not like how it looked and stored it in their parents’ basement, where it spent decades. Measuring a total of 37 inches long, it had an old repair but that did not discourage bidders from taking it to $84,000 from a bidder on the phone. It was one of nearly 1,200 lots that saw other highlights in a Masudaya Machine Man robot, a Tippco Santa Claus Driving Auto and a belsnickle and reindeer-drawn sleigh on platform. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium; an upcoming issue will explore more of the sale’s highlights.
