An exhibition, “Coastal Reflections: Photographs of John Gregory” from the collection of Henry Santoro will be on view at Cape Cod Museum Of Art from March 12 to May 8. Provincetown artist and photographer John Gregory (1903-1992) studied with the accomplished artist John Sloan in New York City. Among Mr Gregory’s many exhibits was a solo show in 1948 at the Smithsonian Institution, where he was called one of the finest pictorial photographers in America. Several of his photos remain in the Smithsonian’s permanent collection. After leaving New York, he and his wife moved into the oldest house in Provincetown and lived there until his death. Mr Gregory was also named one of the top ten graphic artists in America. New England radio personality Henry Santoro of the FNX Radio Network fell in love with Mr Gregory’s work after seeing one of his photos in the Provincetown Seafood Cookbook and immediately began to buy any Gregory photo or lithograph he could find. He found his first piece on eBay and was the only bidder. According to Mr Santoro, “Nobody captured the personality of Provincetown better than John Gregory. And he did it by focusing his camera on the landscape, the seascape and the sky. John Gregory is the Ansel Adams of Cape Cod.” There will be a gallery talk with Mr Santoro on Friday, April 22, at 4 pm. The talk will be followed by a reception from 5 to 7 pm for spring exhibitions, which also include “Joyce Johnson: A Retrospective,” “Cy Fried Paintings and Photographs” and “Recent Gifts & Acquisitions.” Cape Cod Museum of Art is at 60 Hope Lane at the Cape Playhouse Center for the Arts.
