GOFFSTOWN, N.H. — On February 13, New Hampshire Auctions and Appraisals conducted its 222-lot Mid-Winter Military & Collectibles Auction with a diverse assortment for every collector. One of the highlights from the sale was a framed 40-dollar (Spanish milled dollars) note from 1779. The bill, which was numbered “86266” and dated “14 January 1779,” was issued by the United States Continental Congress and given to Rufus Moore (1750-1838) in payment for his service during the Revolutionary War. The bill’s reverse stated that it was “Printed by Hall and Sellers, 1779.” The currency soared past both its initial printed value and its $150/250 estimate, reaching $813, including buyer’s premium. A more comprehensive review of the auction will be featured in a later issue.
